Yehaw, It’s a Hoedown!

On the spring break prior to Erin’s 7th birthday, we went to Texas to visit family and she came back inspired to have a Texan inspired party.  So we went with a Hoedown.

Here’s a quick peek at the Hoedown.  No time to get detailed now…buried deep in preparation of a Mystery Party.  Will do a follow up with info on crafts, activities and goody bags.  Enjoy!

A Luau!

This is one of my favorites.  I love this theme and would do it over and over for kids or adults!  Lots of good eye candy at this party.

One of my favorite details for this party was the invitation.  We did a message in a bottle and stuck them in everyone’s cubby at school.  They turned out so cute and wouldn’t you know I didn’t take a picture!  I will recreate the invitation and post it on another day (no time today).  I just used water bottles, sand, shells, twine and the invitation.

Picture to come in another post.

Food

We simply bought a beach Barbie already in a bathing suit and stuck her in the hula skirt cake.  This Barbie even came with the dolphin.

We decorated cupcakes with crushed graham crackers for sand and blue icing for water and embellished them with umbrellas, palm trees, toy sharks and sugar tiki heads, flip flops and surf boards.

We used toothpicks and skewers to add to the Luau vibe – colorful fruit, cut the top off the pineapple and used it as décor on the platter and the base of the pineapple to hold grape kabobs.

The Craft

  • decorated foam frames with foam beach inspired stickers
  • I stuck magnets on the back and we took a group pic of the kids in their beachcomber hats to insert into the frame.

Activities

  • Limbo
  • Hot “Coconut” (don’t use a real coconut, it might give someone a fat lip…not that I know anything about thatSmile)
  • Drop the Pencil
  • Treasure Hunt Sand Box
    • After each child gave his/her gift to Erin, they walked over to a plastic bin filled with sand, shells, balls, bracelets, rings and other treasures
    • They also received their frame back with the group picture to put in their goody “bucket”

Goody Buckets

  • Decorated framed group picture
  • Treasures from the sandbox
  • The sand bucket and shovel itself
  • A beachcomber hat (didn’t fit in bucket of course)

Lollipops, A House, A Castle & Some Princesses

Birthday 3  The Lollipop Cake again.  When my daughter saw pics from her first birthday, she wanted the same cake

erins birthday

Birthday 4 - A House Cake?  Don’t ask me why.  I couldn’t figure it out then, but I just went with it since I actually found a cake mold in the shape of a house.  I seriously couldn’t believe it when I found it.  It’s one of those you can make into a haunted house or gingerbread house, but ours was just a house, just because she wanted a house cake.  She initially asked for a monster cake, which I thought would’ve been fun, but the house it was.

Birthday 5 – The Princess Party!  I could not resist these cute princess cakes from Kroger of all places!  We used these for a small lunch/playdate style party with three of her friends.

Belle was her favorite!

Here’s what you need:

  • princess CDs to jam in the background
  • fancy plastic goblets adorned with ribbon
  • pink and purple balloons afloat (pink and purple anything)
  • pink tablecloth
  • bows on the chairs (I cut down my tablecloth and used the extra pieces to create bows.)
  • lunch served on a fancy platter.  We used a three tiered platter with the usual kid fare – PB & J, grapes, strawberries and chicken tenders.

The Craft

IMG_2621

  • heart shaped frames to be decorated with paint, gems, and foam stickers
  • pretty beads and beads with letters for their names to make bracelets

The Frill

  • mani/pedis – a friend and I just painted their nails, didn’t bring out foot soaks or anything, but you could if you really want to get fancy
  • dusted them with fairy dust – found a sparkly powder at Target
  • a little lip balm

Goody Bags

  • nail polish
  • lip balm
  • wands
  • bracelet
  • rings
  • their decorated frames

For the family party, my sis made this fantastic castle cake!  Tinker Belle didn’t make it to this partySmile.  She made it to our bellies from the playdate party.

So that was birthday 3, 4 and 5.  Up next, 6, 7 and finally 8!

Polka Dot Party

Okay, so I realize that I’m getting a little nostalgic taking a walk down memory lane with this birthday series.  Just to warn you, my heart was melting again looking at these old pics, so I probably posted too many.  I do also want to note that these first few parties are lacking details and epic decorations or tablescapes.  One, I cannot remember all the details, and two, I really kept them quite simple.  The star of the party was the cake and the birthday girl of course!

I hope these first few parties will at least inspire you and get your creative juices flowing as a jumping off point for your next party.  In the next few posts, I will offer more details rather than just me getting ooey gooey over my kidsSmile.  But for now, enjoy one last sappy post.

Next up is Little E’s 2nd birthday…the Polka Dot Party!

You can’t dispute the cuteness of polka dots! Am I right?

DSC01713

And you can’t dispute the cuteness of that smooshy little face! I can’t handle it! That little smoosh has grown so fast!  Sorry, getting sidetracked down memory lane again.

So the obvious choice of candy at a polka dot party is candy dots of course!

DSC01714

For the goody bags, I let the kids put polka dot stickers on white lunch bags.

DSC01716

You can have a lot of fun with this theme. Use anything circular…

  • use dot art paint
  • give out balls
  • make music CD favors
  • punch out circles with a big circle punch and create a garland
  • oh, bubbles, of course bubbles. We used those giant bubble wands from the dollar store.
  • bubble wrap, have a stompin good time
  • balloons of course
  • polka dot paper straws, napkins and plates

Endless options.

Okay, one last trip down memory lane because I can’t get enough of these pictures!  It feels like I’ve never seen them before!  Time flies!!

DSC01717

Can’t beat the feeling of new sand between your fingers and toes.

DSC01719

Look at her using that fork like a pro!

DSC01727

Too cool for words.

DSC01730

A party is just not a party without an umbrella drink!

DSC01733

Yay!  That was fun!

DSC01739

Now I’m done!

DSC01747

Two down, six to go…

…another lollipop cake, a house cake??, princess party, luau, hoedown and a mystery!

Happy Friday!

Lollipop Cake

I mentioned in my last post that I was going to share some birthday fun since this month is my daughter’s birthday.  So I thought I’d start with her very first birthday to kick it off!  I was in love with this cake that I found from one of Martha Stewart’s magazines way back when.  It is even easy enough for someone like me to make.  But of course, I prefer to delegate such tasks to the master of bakery in my family, my sister Jackie.

DSC01231

I still love that cake.  Just adorable.

DSC01232

My sis made her very own mini version for the traditional first birthday cake dive!

DSC01245

Funny thing is that Erin actually sucked on the suckers more than anything.

DSC01246

Look, she’s double fisting the suckers!

DSC01250

Look how smooshy they are.  I just want to squeeze ‘em up!!

DSC01247

Oh, here we go, finally going for the cake…

DSC01251

I think she decided the cake wasn’t bad either.  Look at that smile!

DSC01252

Looking through these old pictures just makes me want to jump in a picture so I can hold my little babies again!!  Oh, I just want to eat her up!  This birthday series is getting me a bit ooey and gooey inside.

Up next, polka dots!
