An Ode to the Organized

Okay, Type A’s out there.  This is your chance to do the “I told you so” dance.  Your ways might be winning me over.

It’s been a whirlwind of a week.  My husband was out of town and my dad ended up in the hospital again.  This might sound weird, but that has inspired me to stay on track with my quest to get organized.  Basically, if I have to pass the baton to someone else to run the show over here, organization is key.  The more systems that are in place, the less I have to prepare to get out the door, taking some of the stress out of an already stressful situation.

I am determined to give everything a home to make it easier when I’m not there.  I’m already finding some calm from my laundry room reorg.  It used to be, we would have to look in five different places for a light bulb and now all light bulbs have a home in the cubbies.  In the grand scheme of things, that might sound trivial, but little things like that do make a difference.

I made a couple organizational changes in the kitchen and family room too.  They are minor changes, but really make a big impact in everyday life.  Really just happy little moments for me, but hey, it’s a {mini} organizational moment, nonetheless.

This knife block for the drawer brings me more joy than it should.  It’s almost embarrassing.  I had the knives on the counter and it was just not working, so then I threw them all in a drawer scattered everywhere.  But now…oh, just look at them all lined up!  And the block fits perfectly.  Do I sound like a crazy lady how excited I am about this?!

I’ve professed my love for trays before and it carries on.  This round tray basket completely changes the look of this table and keeps everything nicely corralled.  True love.  The added texture and color may just save me from painting the table too.

Being gone has also got me thinking that we need to reinforce a chore system around here.  I have to admit that we are as much of the problem as anyone in our house.  We are good at starting a chore system and letting it fall to the wayside.  We’ve tried many different approaches.  What do you do to keep things running in your home?  Do share!

Thankfully my hubby is back and my dad is where he needs to be right now.  Here’s to a calm and relaxing (and maybe a little organizing) weekend!

Happy Friday, my friends!

  1. Hope your dad is feeling better! In regards to chores, a couple of things that we do that I find helpful is to use one chore chart centrally located and list chores for the day (I just use a dry erase board). I also have a written out morning routine that I refer to every morning and one of the things on my routine is to update the chore chart. I also have written evening routines and one of the things I have included is to make sure the chores are done... In regards to actually getting the chores done... I use dinner time as an opportunity to tell the kids that the chore chart has been updated and that they need to get them done right after dinner. I still have to follow up to actually make sure they get done though. I have also learned not to bother updating the chore chart if I don't feel up for making sure they get done. Kids won't take it seriously if parents don't follow through, so now I only update it if I know we have the time to actually do them and if I have the energy to be the enforcer. Most days there are chores on there that have to get done every day (i.e. mail, taking out recyclables, set table, and put away clean silverware). Good luck!

    1. Thanks, Polly! I think I'm going to pull out an old checklist I made a while back and try to get it back in action. My youngest seems to really love checklists right now, so maybe that's a winner. ;)

  2. Hi Kim,
Just wondering where you found the knife rack for the drawer. I'm using the toss them all in the drawer method and I'm going crazy!

    Thanks, Alice.

    1. Alice, I stumbled upon it at Target of course! ;) Where else do I shop? ha-ha. But I did happen upon one at Home Goods the other day. I imagine you could find them in the kitchen department at Kohls, Bed Bath & Beyond or department stores too. Hoping to tackle the rest of my drawers soon!

  4. Congrats on your organizational milestones! I am doing a little bit of that here, too. It sure doesn't come naturally though! Hope your dad feels better soon. I have spent way too many days sitting with my dad in a hospital room and it is an exhausting experience for everyone. Hugs!
